Creating a cutting-edge experience for Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

To celebrate the cinematic phenomenon, Sprite created an interactive experience for Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Dogstudio/DEPT® developed this 3D experience, known as the “Hall of Zero Limits” for Sprite and Marvel Studios. This experience immersed audiences in the enchanting world of Wakanda and provided a behind-the-scenes look at some of the work of the multicultural women behind the film.

Getting inspired by the Wakandan universe

Using an on-pack QR code as a gateway, Sprite Zero Sugar wanted creators to reveal their infinite potential in the celebration of Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Sprite envisioned an immersive experience where creators could embrace their potential and celebrate diversity. Dogstudio/DEPT® and Wunderman Thompson were inspired by architectural designs, historical references, and cultural nuances of the Wakandan universe.

Combining traditional techniques with cutting-edge technology

To bring this vision to life, we used a combination of traditional sketching techniques and cutting-edge AI technologies.

Leveraging both sketched designs and DALL-E-rendered visuals, we created a foundation for the 3D design process. From detailed plant details and intricate statues to the play of light and shadow, we filled the digital experience with Wakandan elements.

Overcoming the challenges of WebGL

Translating the metallic aspects of Wakanda required us to develop reflections for the silvers and golds within the virtual environment.

With the challenges of physically based rendering in WebGL, we decided to create our own High Dynamic Range Images (HDRIs) to achieve the desired visual effect. These HDRIs, 360° images wrapped around 3D models for lighting and background purposes, enabled us to create realistic textures.

Creating Wakanda’s futuristic aesthetic

Building on the concept of Wakanda as the world’s most technologically-advanced nation, we created a graphic language that combined Afrofuturism with Art Deco influences. Minimal outlines, GUI shapes, and holographic backdrops formed the basis of this design language, representing the fusion of luxury and modernity.

Typography choices were carefully chosen to embody craftsmanship in a modernistic form. Up to launch, we continuously refined and added small elements to enhance the typography, adding custom motion graphics and Wakandan typeface transitions.
